
Qatar Tourism Authority sponsors the SonyEricsson WTA Tour
Top female tennis players will compete in Doha October 27-November 1, 2009
Doha, Qatar (26 October 2009)- As part of its strategy to promote sports tourism in Qatar, Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA) has announced that it will sponsor the SonyEricsson WTA Tour in Doha. The Championships will begin in Qatar on October 27th and will continue through November 1st at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex. This is the second of three years that the SonyEricsson WTA Tour will play in Doha.
Doha first hosted the SonyEricsson WTA Tour in 2008, marking the first time the tour’s year-end event had been played in the Middle East. This year, the tournament will feature top female players Dinara Safina, Serena Williams, Elena Dementiva, Caroline Wozniacki, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Venus Williams and Victoria Azarenka. An eighth player will be added to this list following the lead-up SonyEricsson tour event in Moscow: the Kremlin Cup. In Doha, the women will compete in both singles and doubles tournaments, contending for prizes totaling US$4.55 million.
